Abstract

We record the flowering, fruiting and senescence events of the bamboo Merostachys skvortzovii Sendulsky in the state of Paraná, Brazil. This species is known as “taquara-lixa” and its distribution is widespread, mostly along the “Floresta Ombrófila Mista” (Araucaria forest). Information from herbarium specimens and field observations from 2003 to 2006 showed that the period between reproductive events ranges from 30 to 34 years, and that each event lasts 3-4 years. Throughout 2003 to 2006, the flowering occurred from October to January and the fruition from December to March. This information is important to understand some aspects related to the massive flowering of these bamboos, like the “ratadas” (population outbursts of native rats) and its implications to human diseases, besides population dynamics and restoration of the forests where these plants occur.
