The genus Staurastrum Meyen ex Ralfs, Staurodesmus Teiling Ehrenberg ex Ralfs and Xanthidium are important representatives of algal biodiversity of the Upper Paraná River floodplain

The objective of this study was to describe and illustrate planktonic species of Staurastrum, Staurodesmus, and Xanthidium in an isolated floodplain lake. Samples of the total phytoplankton and plankton net were carried out in the limnetic zone of the lake, in the years 2000, 2001, 2010, and 2011. The genus with the highest number of taxa was Staurastrum (15), followed by Staurodesmus (11), and Xanthidium (3). The largest contribution of sporadic and rare species was recorded in 2010 and 2011, with the period of low waters observing the highest frequency of taxa. Thus, the temporal distribution of desmids was directly related to the temporal dynamics of the hydrosedimentological regime in this fl oodplain, which alters the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, which in turn impacts the structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton community, thus infl uencing the distribution of this group in the Jacaré pond.
