Abstract

The new species Senecio rauchii Matzenbacher, (Asteraceae – Senecioneae) assigned to section
Corymbocephalus Cabrera, subsection Simplices Cabrera, is described and illustrated. This species is characterized by its stems ramified apically forming a lax corymbiform capitulescence; leaves membranaceous, lanceolate, irregularly pinnatifid; phyllaries glabrous, apex penicillate; cypselae cylindrical, sulcate, 10-ribbed, loosely sericeus-pubescent. At the present time the species was confirmed only to the Rio Grande do Sul State, hence it has to be considered in the IUCN (2001) Red List criteria as Not Evaluated (NE).
