Abstract

This paper presents a taxonomical study about four species of the genus Holocheilus Cass. which have been surveyed: Holocheilus brasiliensis (L.) Cabr., H. illustris (Vell.) Cabr., H. monocephalus Mondin and H. hieracioides (D. Don) Cabr . Holocheilus is a subtropical genus, composed by seven herbaceous species, five of which occur in Northern Argentina, five in Southern Brazil, three in Uruguay and one in Paraguay. The species occupy dry or wet open places, from low plains to montane habitats. The paper includes an analytical key, descriptions, illustrations, habitat comments, time to blossom and the geographical distribution of the species in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
