Variation of the biomass and productivity of Potamogeton pectinatus L. (Potamogetonaceae) in the Lagoa Verde, Rio Grande, RS.

Potamogeton pectinatus, aquatic macrophyte, biomass, productivity.Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the variation of the biomass of Potamogeton pectinatus L. (Potamogetonaceae), in the Lagoa Verde, in response to abiotic factors. Daily measurements of depth, temperature, salinity, and pH of the water were taken from April 2001 to May 2004. The seasonal variations in the biomass were measured through monthly collections, in the same period. The biomass values of P. pectinatus were significantly different along the three years of study (p < 0.05), with higher values in 2001, and a gradual reduction in the annual values of liquid primary production. The reduced radiation intensity and the high temperatures of 2001 and 2002, or the salinity raise and the reduction of pH in 2003, probably induced the disappearance of the population. The allocation of the biomass at the subterranean tissues at the end of each growth season, represent a strategy of these populations to survive during the winter, characterizing the existence of an annual cycle of life controlled by abiotic factors.
